Pico (owned by ByteDance) has previewed “Project Swan,” a new headset designed to compete directly with Meta Quest 3 and the lower-end Apple Vision models. Early specs highlight 40 PPD (pixels per degree) displays and a total weight reduction of 15% compared to the Pico 4.
Strategic Positioning: While Apple targets the ultra-high-end “prosumer” and Meta focuses on social/gaming, Pico is aiming for the “productivity-first” consumer. Project Swan reportedly features improved passthrough clarity and an emphasis on “spatial office” software.
Why XR Professionals Should Pay Attention: Hardware diversification is critical for the health of the industry. If Pico can deliver Vision Pro-like resolution at a sub-$800 price point, it could shift the market share of enterprise training and remote collaboration toward ByteDance’s ecosystem.
